Update: Thanks for the link Romenesko!
Today is a big day for us as our friends at the Boston Globe soft-launched Your Boston, a Facebook application powered by our open source NewsCloud application platform.
The whole idea behind this Facebook technology is to help media organizations build a community space for readers to interact with each other and the news in new ways. Our platform has a variety of features and the Globe's implementation is using crowdsourced features for link gathering (directory), Q&A, idea generation, events and blogging.
Our collaboration with the Globe has been funded by the John S. and James L. Knight Foundation since December 2009 as part of a larger project to launch Facebook sites for news organizations.
As all Knight-funded projects are open source, you can download the code or learn more about our efforts at http://opensource.newscloud.com. We also recommend you follow @newscloud on twitter.
The Globe's site is running in their own Amazon AWS cloud and our technology is based on Ruby on Rails. We'll continue to improve this technology and the open source codebase through April 30th, 2011.
If you have questions or want to learn more, you can also visit our support site (powered freely and generously by TenderApp.com due to our open source status).
Note: You may also want to check out the Knight News Challenge, deadline for new entries is coming up quicly: December 1st.
